Mayflower 400 Southampton

Workshops for visually impaired young people by artist Rachel Gadsden

Rachel Gadsden, an internationally renowned visually impaired artist, worked with six visually impaired and/or disabled young people, and their siblings, as part of an exciting free Easter holiday art project supported by Short Breaks funding. During the five online workshops, the young people created sculptures based on themes relating to the story of the Mayflower ship, the passengers who departed from Southampton to travel to America in August 1620, and the Native American people that they met there. All the art and craft materials were posted to the participants’ homes, out of which they created the most fantastical sculptured heads. A number of the sculptures appeared alongside the work of professional artists in the Displaced exhibition which ran from 5 – 30 May 2021.
