Solent Showcase Workshops

Solent Showcase Gallery is working with 2 local artists, Nazneen Ahmed and Abeer Kayani to deliver community workshops and activity packs based on the principles of Islamic geometry, home and belonging. The activities are intended for a wide audiences while the workshops will focus on women’s groups and schools in the city to bring a rich collaboration of diverse communities, skills, talent and ambition together. Project outcomes will be included in a gallery window exhibition Showcase Gallery in 2021.  Nazneen Ahmed and Abeer Kayani will also be collaborating on a special commission for a new exhibition for 2021 – Manifesting the Unseen, an exhibition of Muslim women artists that seeks to remove barriers & reveal hidden truths by creating a discursive space to experience the unique artistic language of Islamic art & its modern cultural expression.

Nazneen Ahmed is a Southampton based, British Bangladeshi author and at present she is working on an historical fantasy novel for young people which draws on South Asian traditions of magic and the history of seafarers in 19thC London. Through this Mayflower 400 project she will build upon her current research on migration and identity.

 

Abeer Kayani is a Southampton based recent graduate who specialises in Printed textiles.  She works with bold colour and intricate patterns and sees these as an integral expression of her cultural identity having grown up in Pakistan.  Her designs are inspired by harmonious, repetitive patterns, developed using CAD and hand-screen print.
