The Mayflower 400 Southampton team expands

30 Mar 2020

The Mayflower 400 team are pleased to announce two freelancers have joined the Mayflower 400 ranks as Production Manager and Community Engagement Officer. The two new appointments, both local, complement the existing team and bring additional skills, expertise and capacity to the programme.

The Production Manager, Louise Birchill, will oversee coordination and logistics of the various touring outdoor arts productions that will visit Southampton as part of the programme. They will also support local artist to produce larger scale works, expanding the city’s skill set and increasing future ambition. This post is possible thanks to funding from Arts Council England.

The Community Engagement Officer, Joe Ross, will lead on our work with communities, encouraging people to take part in various ‘join-in’ projects. They will be working with communities to enable them to lead their own projects, assisting them with applying for funding and developing their ideas with them. Southampton City Council acknowledge the large part that grass-roots community groups play in Southampton’s cultural offer and want to support this, particularly with our City of Culture bid on the horizon. This post is possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Mayflower 400 team also welcomed on board a team from Oasis Academy Mayfield to develop a heritage based school resource which enables learning in primary, secondary and SEN environments. The resource is centred on migration and focuses specifically on meeting the School of Sanctuary priorities. The first part of the resource is based upon historical migrations, including stories from the Mayflower; the second stage is based on contemporary stories from local migrants. Oral historian Padmini Broomfield will collect stories from local elders throughout 2020 which will inspire several pieces of work for Mayflower 400. The resource aims to teach understanding, tolerance and empathy.
